The clauses are coded "whenever a theme or verbal act occurs which ... can discriminate the severity of the schizophrenic syndrome" (1964, p. 40). The categories are weighted according to the discriminative power each has shown in validation experiments.

The practice with schizophrenic speakers is different. Here, the aim has been to capture, not the distributional properties of the corpus, but its deviant features. That is, rather than describing the utterances as a whole, investigators of schizophrenic speech have attempted to characterize those features of the corpus that differ from normal. In effect, 36 SHERRY ROCHESTER the effort has been to describe the failures rather than the overall performance of the schizophrenic speaker. There have been a few exceptions to this practice.

However, there are two difficulties with studies of "verbal responses" like this one: they do not inform us about actual language use, and they may mislead us about information processes. Let us consider these problems in turn. 1. Language Use. Studies that require patients to respond in terms of a single word may be tapping specific skills and not a general ability to use semantic information. In this task, as in word association experiments, the subject'S response is likely to involve stages in which (1) the subject must "understand" the stimulus; (2) and "operate" on the meaning of the stimulus; and (3) produce a response.
