This booklet is the end result of the foreign Symposium on Neural Networks for Sensory and Motor structures (NSMS) held in March 1990 within the FRG. The NSMS symposium assembled forty five invited specialists from Europe, the USA and Japan representing the fields of Neuroinformatics, computing device technological know-how, Computational Neuroscience, and Neuroscience.

As a rapidly-published file at the cutting-edge in Neural Computing it types a reference publication for destiny study during this hugely interdisciplinary box and will end up invaluable within the undertaking to move innovations of mind functionality and constitution to novel neural desktops with adaptive, dynamical neural internet topologies.

A function of the booklet is the completeness of the references supplied. An alphabetical checklist of all references quoted within the papers is given, in addition to a separate checklist of basic references to assist rookies to the sphere. a topic index and writer index additionally facilitate entry to numerous details.

This is obtained by a somatotopic network of neural assemblies in which we allocate units for representing the skeletal segments, the muscles, and the ligaments. Such units are not fine-grained as neurons but are mid-grained as cortical columns or similar cell assemblies in other parts of the brain; they must deal with vectorial quantities (as regards both input and output) and perform simple but not trivial mechanic calculations. However, these calculations need not be very precise because the same redundancy, which challenges the architect of the motor controller, guarantees at the same time a certain robustness to "noise" in the computational process disttibuted to a large number of units.

When the arm rotates between two position in a plane, it is possible to divide the whole 3D space by this plane (POPr). Since the distribution of preferred direction is uniform, each vector Ti in one hemisphere has a correspondent Ti' which is symmetrical with respect to the plane (POPr). The vectorial sum Ti+Ti' belongs to the plane of rotation of the ann and rotates like the arm. The whole population can thus be divided in N doublets (Ti,Ti') and the whole set of vectors will rotate in the same way as the ann in the 3-D space.
