He now had short hair and a Bible under his arm, and he told everyone how the Lord helped him with every part of his life. I was intrigued by that. I was hitchhiking across the country with a friend of mine, on the way to California. It was a way to pass the summer. We decided to stop in Denver and stay with my brother for a couple of days.

A major event leading to my recovery happened when I was sixteen and strung out on drugs. I went to Colorado. The brother who had first turned me on to drugs had moved there. He’d had a very deep religious experience that straightened out his life. He became a born-again Christian. He now had short hair and a Bible under his arm, and he told everyone how the Lord helped him with every part of his life.

I started smoking pot and taking pills, and I started getting lit up on booze. It became my little secret. I knew that a lot of kids were doing it too, because of peer pressure and things like that. But I knew it was my solace, my higher power. It made me feel like I could function in life. So I took to it like a magnet and tried to be wherever drugs and alcohol were found. At the same time, I began to go through puberty. As with my older brothers, puberty brought out my anger, and again, I’d take it out on my little brother.
