Caerulescens (Lesser Snow Goose), but A. c. atlanticus (Greater Snow Goose), of Canada and Greenland, vagrant to Japan. HH Breeds colonially on open tundra. On migration and in winter, lakes, marshes and agricultural land. ID Adult a small all-white goose with black primaries. 1st-winter has dingy grey upperparts and neck. See Ross’s Goose. N American Lesser Snow has dark morph (‘Blue Goose’; accidental N Japan). Largely dark blue-grey with white head and wing-coverts, but range of intermediates between ‘blue’ and white extremes.
Taiga slightly larger, with longer, more slender bill and more Whooper Swan-like head and bill shape. Tundra has shorter thicker neck, rounder head, and stubbier bill, giving strongly sloping profile; appears ‘glumfaced’. In flight, mantle, upperwing, rump and underwing all dark (cf. Greylag), whilst white fringes to tertials and scapulars make back more patterned than Greater White-fronted. Whilst Taiga and Tundra clearly differ in proportions from Greater White-fronted, in flight they might be confused; the ad.
In region occurs in coastal Fujian and Zhejiang. Monotypic. HH Forested hills (evergreen broadleaf and coniferous) with bamboo thickets and dense undergrowth; to 1,500m. ID large, dark chestnutbrown with bare red facial skin, long, brown-banded silver-grey tail (39–44cm) and white belly. Head and nape grey-white, chin black, broad brown collar, mantle and wings largely dark chestnut-brown with black scaling, wings have two white bands, black rump scaled white. Chest dark blackish-chestnut, belly white, with flanks scaled dark brown.
